About us
The information on this website is provided by the joint project partners (Enliven Positive Ageing a service of Presbyterian Support East Coast, Hawke's Bay District Health Board, Hastings District Council, Napier City Council and Eldernet) in conjunction with community groups in the Hawke’s Bay region. The project Leader is Enliven Positive Ageing Services.
The aim of this service is to give older people information about what is available in Hawke’s Bay. We have developed our list of local community groups to encourage you to “connect”. Community groups included welcome your enquiry and new members to their groups.
We will continue to work with local community groups to help them enter their own information onto the site and support them to keep it updated so that it has ongoing relevance to you.
Without the involvement of these local community groups this website would not exist.
Many community groups operate with considerable input from volunteers who generously give of their time. We want to acknowledge these people and thank them for their often unrecognised work.
The information on this website is also available in printed version and may be obtained, on request from libraries and community groups who may or may not make a small charge to cover printing costs. Free copies will be available for a limited time and can be obtained from Presbyterian Support East Coast,
The following gives you some information about each of the project partners.
- Enliven Positive Ageing Services - Presbyterian Support is working along side others to develop a full continuum of support services for the aging population in our region.
- Enliven is based on positive aging principles that regards aging as natural , supports older people to have choices and achieve their aims and encourages the community to embrace the challenges of the aging population.
- Enliven services are based on restoring the physical, mental and social well-being of older people and their family through listening to what older people want, providing rehabilitation, opportunities for friendship, health and supportive communities.
- Enliven has been proven by independent research to dramatically improve the lives of older people and their family care givers.
- Enliven is allowing many older people to remain at home who would otherwise be in rest homes or hospitals. Enliven has nine services in operation, has 200 clients and is growing rapidly.
- Enliven is working with councils, health providers and other community groups to promote a positive attitude to aging in the East Coast.
- Hawke’s Bay District Health Board - Health of the Older Person is a key priority for the Hawke's Bay District Health Board. Central to the development of services is the strategic document - Ageing in Hawke’s Bay - Health of Older People Strategy 2005 -2010.
The Hawke's Bay District Health Board supports many services for older people both in hospital and the community. Providing access to information for older people, their families and whanau to make well informed choices about options for healthy living, healthcare and disability support needs is vital. Hastings District Council is made up of three main centres, Hastings City, Havelock North, and Flaxmere which lie to the South of Napier. Thirty-eight rural settlements are also found throughout the District including Clive and Bridge Pa. This creates a total population of 70,842 (2006). Population projections indicate that our district’s older population will grow from 12.4% to 22.7% of the population by 2026 (comparable to 19.9% nationally) or 1 in 4 to 5 people will be over the age of 65.
Hastings District Council recently reviewed its older adult policy through the Positive Ageing Forum made up of community organisations. One of the key issues identified was that many of our older citizens need to be supported to maintain their independence and social connectedness to ensure full participation in the community. We are happy to support this directory as one of the actions to address this in the community’s Positive Ageing Strategy 2007. (Click this link to view the Positive Ageing Policy ) It sets forth several actions and goals to foster a caring and inclusive community. For further information about this and the work of Hastings District Council click on our logo.
Napier City Council - There are 55,400 people in Napier today, plenty of scope for individuals, groups and organisations of all shapes and sizes to work, play, have fun and make a positive difference to the city. Napier also has a higher percentage of its population aged 60 and over than New Zealand as a whole.
As a council we encourage the participation of older people in our community in a variety of ways to engage with others and to enhance the community and social well being of our diverse city. This project for instance provides you with information about community groups you can participate in and also gives you other information to support you into the future. - Eldernet is a nationwide database directory of services for older people. Besides providing the website for this Hawke’s Bay community groups project it also gives information about home support services, retirement housing options, residential care e.g. rest homes, private aged care hospitals and dementia care services etc. Users of Eldernet include older people their families and professionals who work in this sector.
Each of the project partners provides further information on their own websites of relevance to older people. The links to their websites (see the above blue underlined links or the logos below) are to either their home page or to a part of their website which is specifically relevant to older people.
We hope you find this website helpful. It has been initiated for you so please use it and please let others know about it. If you would like to make suggestions about how we could improve it please contact the Directory Coordinator (email address). We welcome your comments. Together we can create a better service.
